HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - WREC - 09/15/2015 Weir River Estuary Park Committee (WREPComm) Meeting Minutes from September 15th, 2015 The meeting, held at the Weir River Estuary Center(333 George Washington Blvd, Hull) on Wednesday September 15th was called to order by 7:10pm. Members- present: Dick Avery(Cohasset), Patti Coyle (Hingham), Dave Sibor(Hingham); absent: Faith Burbank (Hingham) and Judeth Van Hamm (Hull), Scott Plympton (Hull). Housekeeping: Members present reviewed and approved the minutes from May 27th; no other votes were taken. Patti Coyle volunteered to serve as Scribe. Updates on current activities: a) Cohasset: Dick Avery reported that the algae blooms in Straits Pond are back with a vengeance; the cause is undetermined at this time. Straits Pond Watershed Assoc. and Hull Conservation Administrator Anne Herbst will try to understand this phenomenon (maybe check salinity?). After several reminders,the broken asphalt dumped at CCT's Windsor Shores property was removed. b) Hingham: Trails Plan progress continues. Conservation Agent Abby Piersall has left her post to take a position in Waterford, CT; Faith and Patti attended her'good-bye' party at Town Hall on August 13th. The search for her replacement has begun; Abby will be missed. Dick Avery noted that 4 people attended the birding seminar, sponsored by Mass Audubon and led by Sally Avery, on September 12th in Bare Cove Park; 20 species of birds were sited. Repaving project on Union St— Dave Sibor wonders if DPW works with Conservation Commission when planning construction projects. Patti Coyle reported that there was virtually no surface water during another dry summer in Bare Cove Park,Whitney-Thayer Woods and Wompatuck. The small rapids that feed Triphammer Pond were silent, and so were the outflow sluice gates at the dam. Ponds and reservoirs were low,though not as drastic as last year. c) Hull: Dick Avery reports that a grant request was submitted for engineering estimates to get rid of grout at the Crescent Beach seawall, and to raise the seawall 4 feet. There has been paving at Atlantic Avenue, because the storm water reconstruction project won't start for another five years.
