HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - SC - 04/24/2019 \bid a p Q r.I O�vly y1 Cohasset School Committee Meeting School Committee Minutes Wednesday, April 24, 2019 Cohasset Middle-High School Community Use Room 143 Pond Street Cohasset, MA In Attendance: Jeanne Astino, Chairman Ellen Maher Jennifer Madden Barbara Stefan Paul Kearney Also in Attendance: Louise Demas, Superintendent Dr. Patrick Sullivan, Assistant Superintendent Michael MacMillan, Director of Finance& Operations Chairman Astino called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.: Present-Barbara Stefan; Present-Jeanne Astino; Present-Ellen Maher; Present-Paul Kearney; Present-Jennifer Madden. The Chair stated the need for an executive session for purpose#2, negotiations with non-union personnel, superintendent. A motion was made by Mrs. Maher for purpose#2 and seconded by Mrs. Stefan. Roll-call vote was unanimous, 5-0. The committee entered executive session at 7:01 p.m. Chairman Astino called the meeting back to order at 7:30 p.m. at which time the committee was joined by Superintendent Demas, Dr. Sullivan, and Mr. MacMillan. Pledge-Recited. Public Comment-None. Approval of Warrant-Motion by Mrs. Maher to approve Warrant#19-18S,seconded by Mrs. Stefan. Roll Call Vote; Paul Kearney-Aye, Barbara Stefan-Aye,Jeanne Astino-Aye, Ellen Maher-Aye,Jennifer Madden-Aye. Superintendent's Report-Safe School Committee Progress Update-Dr. Sullivan gave an overview of the committee which consists of over 30 members, including teachers, students, parents, staff, Safe Harbor 1 representative, SC members, and the School Resource Officer. He discussed some of the reasons they formed the committee. They created a mission statement and he discussed the core values of the committee. Dr. Sullivan stated they went through an "I HOPE" exercise in which he asked staff and students to write notes of what they hoped for at school. He reviewed some of the notes. He discussed adaptive and technical changes. Dr. Sullivan noted that National Prevention Week coming up from May 12th-18th Three students, all juniors,from CMHS discussed the events planned. Dr. Sullivan then discussed the subcommittees they developed on the Safe Schools Committee and members from each gave brief overviews of their work. Chris Colleran of Cohasset Safe Harbor gave the details of the Social Emotional Learning&Wellness subcommittee. Brett Youmans gave the details of the Building Security & Protective Measures subcommittee. Brian Scott discussed the Promoting a Safe & Inclusive Culture subcommittee. Superintendent Demas reviewed what the Safe Schools Bullying Procedure Review subcommittee has been doing. Kelly Dunn gave the details of the Communication &Action Planning subcommittee. Chairman Astino noted that the film "The Hate You Give" is being shown at local churches and is also available on Netflix. The Board had a brief discussion about the Committee's progress and next steps. South Shore Education Collaborative Board Member-Superintendent Demas's term is up in June, and she is recommending that the Committee nominate Dr. Sullivan. Motion by Chairman Astino to appoint Dr. Sullivan to the South Shore Education Collaborative Board,seconded by Mrs. Stefan. Roll Call Vote; Paul Kearney-Aye, Barbara Stefan-Aye,Jeanne Astino-Aye, Ellen Maher-Ayer,Jennifer Madden-Aye. 2018-19 Last Day of School-Vote-Superintendent Demas stated the last day of school this year is June 18th with an early release. The Pre-Kindergarten & Kindergarten's last day is June 131h. Motion by Mrs. Stefan to approve the last day of school for Pre-Kindergarten & Kindergarten as June 13th and all other schools June 18th,seconded by Mr. Kearney and the vote was unanimous(5-0). SC Comments&Communications-Approval of Contract of Dr. Patrick Sullivan-Motion by Mrs. Maher to approve Dr. Sullivan's contract for Superintendent from 7/1/19 through 6/30/22,seconded by Mr. Kearney. Roll Call Vote; Paul Kearney-Aye, Barbara Stefan-Aye,Jeanne Astino-Aye, Ellen Maher-Aye, Jennifer Madden-Aye. SC Goals/Update-The committee reviewed and updated their goals. Reading of Policies-Policy AD-Philosophy-Motion by Mrs. Madden to approve policy AD-Philosophy as amended,seconded by Mrs. Stefan and the vote was unanimous(5-0). Policy ADA Goals&Objectives-The SC discussed the policy. Motion by Mrs. Madden to remove Policy ADA Goals&Objectives,seconded by Mr. Kearney and the vote was unanimous(5-0). Motion by Mrs. Madden to accept Policy BA as amended and to remove the Policy ADA cross reference and add the date of 4/24/19 as updated, seconded by Mrs. Stefan and the vote was unanimous(5-0). Policy KF (G-4)-Policy Governing the Use of School Facilities-Motion by Mrs. Madden to delete current Policy KF Policy Governing the Use of School Facilities(G-4),seconded by Mrs.Stefan and the vote was unanimous(5-0). 2 Policy KF (G-5)-Community Use of School Facilities-The Committee discussed and agreed to put on the next agenda for a vote. Policy KF-R-Regulations Governing the Use of School Facilities-The Committee discussed and will bring back to a future meeting. Policy IHBB-Gifted and Talented Education-Motion by Mrs. Madden to remove Policy IHBB Gifted & Talented Education, seconded by Mrs. Stefan and the vote was unanimous(5-0). Reports from Sub-committee and Liaisons-Mrs. Maher advised the Committee the State issued Cherry Sheets and Cohasset had a slight increase. Mrs. Maher attended the Selectmen's meeting and the PEB Committee gave a great presentation and had recommendations. She discussed some highlights and will forward the presentation to the Committee. Mrs. Maher attended the Middle/High School council meeting on Tuesday. They are reviewing the handbooks which will be very specific and different. Mr. Kearney asked Dr. Sullivan about what the district is doing to prepare 5th graders for the transition to the 6th grade. Superintendent Demas stated there is a move-up day that they will participate in that is designed to help with the transition. Approval of Minutes-Motion by Mrs. Madden to approve the minutes of 2/27/19 as amended, seconded by Mr. Kearney and the vote was unanimous(5-0). Motion by Mrs. Stefan to approve the minutes of the 3/6/19 Public Hearing on the FY20 School Budget as amended, seconded by Mr. Kearney and the vote was unanimous(5-0). Motion by Mrs. Stefan to approve the minutes of 3/6/19 as amended, seconded by Mrs. Maher and the vote was unanimous(5-0). Chairman Astino reminded everyone that the Deer Hill Arts "Favorites" Night is tomorrow night at 7 p.m. Superintendent Demas stated the Earth Day Town Cleanup is Saturday. Chairman Astino added that the Annual CEF Fundraiser is Friday night at the Cove at 7 p.m. Mrs. Maher reminded everyone of Annual Town Meeting on Monday,April 29th at 7 p.m. Motion by Mrs. Maher to adjourn, seconded by Mrs.Stefan and the vote was unanimous(5-0).
