HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - SC - 07/11/2018 T CQ%ASSET O Cohasset School Committee Meeting School Committee Minutes Wednesday,July 11, 2018 Cohasset Middle-High School Community Use Room 143 Pond Street Cohasset, MA In Attendance: Jeanne Astino, Chairman Ellen Maher Barbara Stefan Jennifer Madden Paul Kearney Also in Attendance: Louise Demas, Superintendent Patrick Sullivan,Assistant Superintendent John Tuffy, Business Manager Chairman Astino called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Roll Call- Paul Kearney-Present, Barbara Stefan-Present,Jeanne Astino-Present, Ellen Maher-Present,Jennifer Madden-Present. Pledge-Recited. Public Comment-None. Approval of Warrant-Motion by Mrs. Maher to approve Warrant 18-235,seconded by Mr. Kearney. Roll Call Vote; Paul Kearney-Aye, Barbara Stefan-Aye,Jeanne Astino-Aye, Ellen Maher-Aye,Jennifer Madden-Aye. Superintendent's Report-CHS Boys Lacrosse-State Champs and James Beaudoin Coach of the Year. Superintendent Demas congratulated the Cohasset High School Boys Lacrosse team on winning the Division 3 State Title and Coach Beaudoin on being Coach of the Year. Some of the members of the Lacrosse team were present along with Coach Beaudoin. Gift-CSCR-Professional Development in PBL Summit-Superintendent Demas stated Mr. Buckley has donated a gift in the amount of$1700 which is 50%of the stipends that teachers participating will receive. Motion by Mrs. Maher to accept the gift of$1700 for the stipends for teachers participating in the PBL Summit, seconded by Mrs. Stefan. Roll Call Vote- Paul Kearney-Aye, Barbara Stefan-Aye, Jeanne Astino-Aye, Ellen Maher-Aye,Jennifer Madden-Aye. Faculty Hiring Update-Superintendent Demas stated they are very fortunate this year that not many staff members have resigned. They have a new interim athletic director that starts on Monday. The Osgood School has a couple of teachers that are moving from grade one to grade two. The Deer Hill School has hired an ESP in the technology room. The new principal at Deer Hill has already started her work. They have hired a new Associate Principal at the Middle School and are waiting for the contract 1 to be signed. The Middle School has an opening for a French/Spanish teacher. They are also working on a teacher exchange program with a resident of Europe. She will keep the Committee updated. They have hired a Science teacher for Grades 7 & 8 and a new health teacher. The administrators retreat is tomorrow and Friday. The work at the Deer Hill playground is scheduled to start on August 17`" Finance-Preliminary Year End Financial-John Tuffy stated the final numbers after adjustments will be done next week. There aren't any major changes. The revolving fund accounts should be fine after they receive the June reimbursements, which should be received next week. The grants currently show a $10,000 deficit which will change when they receive a $15,000 reimbursement. As of right now it looks as though there will be a $35,000 balance that will be turned back to the town. They have prepaid three months Special Education tuition totaling$415,902. Transportation Update-Mr.Tuffy stated the food service van finished the year with just$90 in repairs. The buses for the year performed well. They are in pretty good shape with no big surprises. The lease is extended until December. The RFP will go out after the year end closes out and will be modeled after last year's RFP. The lease will be January to January, which works out well for the town. Mr. Kearney asked if Mr. Tuffy could investigate seat belts on the buses. He would like to see them for when they travel on highways. Mr.Tuffy agreed and will look into. School Committee Comments and Communications-Approval of Successor Agreement 2019-2021 for ESPs-Motion by Mrs. Maher to approve the Successor Agreement 2019-2021 for ESPs, seconded by Mrs. Stefan. Roll Call Vote; Paul Kearney-Aye, Barbara Stefan-Aye,Jeanne Astino-Aye, Ellen Maher- Aye,Jennifer Madden-Aye. Benchmarking Review-Mrs. Maher presented the Committee with her benchmarking results. She noted that Cohasset remains relatively consistent on most of the indicators year over year. She reviewed enrollment, SAT performance, AP Test results and college acceptances. The Committee discussed the results and how they can branch out with the benchmarking reporting and measuring data differently. Reports from Sub-Committees-Chairman Astino attended the Alternative Energy Committee meeting. They discussed information dashboards and where they should be displayed. They are looking to have students become engaged in the initiatives they are currently working on. Mrs. Stefan recommended the public library. Mrs. Maher attended the Hall of Fame meeting and they have the first round of ballots. Follow-up and Updates-The Committee reviewed and updated the list. Minutes-Motion by Mrs. Stefan to approve the minutes of 5/23/18 as written,seconded by Mr. Kearney and the vote was unanimous (5-0). Motion by Mrs. Stefan to approve the minutes of 6/6/18 as amended, seconded by Mrs. Maher and the vote was unanimous(5-0). Chairman Astino asked for a motion to go into Executive Session for Exemption#3-to discuss strategy related to collective bargaining-Secretaries. Motion moved by Mrs. Maher,seconded by Mr. Kearney. Roll Call Vote: Paul Kearney-Aye, Barbara Stefan-Aye,Jeanne Astino-Aye, Ellen Maher-Aye,Jennifer Madden-Aye. The Committee went into Executive Session at 9:01 p.m. 2 The Committee exited Executive Session at 9:25 p.m. and exited Regular Session at 9:26 p.m. on a motion made by Mrs. Maher and seconded by Mr. Kearney.
