HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - SC - 05/02/2018 G A ' (u� • COHA55ETi N - I Cohasset School Committee Meeting School Committee Minutes Wednesday, May 2, 2018 Cohasset Middle-High School Community Use Room 143 Pond Street Cohasset, MA In Attendance: Jeanne Astino, Chairman Katie Dugan Ellen Maher Barbara Stefan Jennifer Madden Also in Attendance: Louise Demas, Superintendent Dr. Patrick Sullivan, Assistant Superintendent The Board continued its Open Session Meeting at 6:55PM after closing the Public Hearing for School Choice. Pledge of Allegiance— Recited Invitation to Speak- None Approval of Warrant Motion by Mrs. Dugan to approve Warrant 18-195,seconded by Mrs. Stefan. Roll Call Vote; Barbara Stefan-Aye, Katie Dugan—Aye,Jeanne Astino-Aye, Ellen Maher-Aye,Jennifer Madden-Aye. Superintendent's Report Cohasset TREK— Bob Erlandsen and Paula Jewel, Co-leaders of Cohasset TREK, gave a presentation about their April break trip to the Grand Canyon. They reviewed the trip and the positive impact it had on the students and the adults that attended. They had originally come in this evening to propose a trip to Puerto Rico for the 2019 April vacation, but instead they are proposing to go back to the Grand Canyon. The trip was such a success they wish to build upon that experience. They will submit a plan to the committee so it can be reviewed and approved at their meeting of May 23r6 Page 1 of 3 Canobie Lake Trip-Marybeth Reardon, Introductory Physics teacher, addressed the Committee. The trip is proposed for Wednesday,June 131h from 7:30AM-3:30PM. Ms. Reardon stated the trip is a great culmination of what the students have been studying throughout the year. Motion by Mrs. Dugan to approve the 9ch grade Introductory to Physics trip to Canobie Lake Park on June 13, 2018, seconded by Mrs. Stefan. Roll call vote; Barbara Stefan-Aye, Katie Dugan-Aye,Jeanne Astino-Aye, Ellen Maher- Aye,Jennifer Madden-Aye. Deer Hill School Principal-Superintendent Demas formally introduced the new Deer Hill Principal, Alex Sullivan, to the Committee. Ms. Demas reviewed Ms. Sullivan's background for the Board. They are planning transition events, but are waiting to schedule those until the new Business Manager has started. Ms. Sullivan stated that she incredibly grateful and excited for the opportunity. Athletic Director-Superintendent Demas informed the Board that Mr. Ford will not be applying for the Athletic Director position this year as he is going back to the classroom full time. There may be an Interim Director and Mr. Ford has offered to help with the transition. Middle School Principal, Carolyn Connolly, stated that the position reports to her and she will help supervise. Middle School Study Update-Dr. Sullivan reviewed where the Middle School Action Plan Team is with the middle school study.They are about mid-way through the process and it's going very well. The discussions being held now are very much visionary about what they want the middle school to be. They are moving from internal conversations to external parties and it is going very well. Faculty Hiring Update-Mrs. Demas updated the Committee on faculty: a Central Office Bookkeeper will be hired when the new Business Manager starts. John Tuffy's extension has been filed to cover him through July and a reading position will be posted internally. They received a retirement today from Jane Gregory, a Health teacher. Gift-Gifts-Mrs. Demas advised the Committee the PSO has donated a check for$7,189.88 for the outside classroom. Motion by Mrs. Dugan to accept the gift of$7189.88 from the PSO, seconded by Mrs. Stefan. Roll Call Vote; Katie Dugan-Aye,Jeanne Astino-Aye, Ellen Maher-Aye,Jennifer Madden- Aye School Committee Comments and Communication -Chairman Astino announced that the Committee voted on the Teacher's Contract for 2019-2021. They are very excited this has been completed before the end of the school year. She also asked the Committee if they want to consider a summer workshop with MASC. Report of Sub-Committees- Ellen Maher stated that the Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be Thanksgiving weekend in 2018. For 2020, the ceremony may be moved to the summer to coincide with the Cohasset 2501h celebration. Katie Dugan's Last Meeting! The committee presented Mrs. Dugan a gift bag with beach themed items for all of her"free time" now that she is no longer on the Committee. Mrs. Dugan thanked the Committee for the gifts. She stated that she had learned a lot over the past three years. Executive Session Minutes Approval: Motion by Mrs. Dugan to approve the following Executive Session Minutes with amendments to follow: August 9, 2017,August 17, 2017,August 30, 2017, September 6, 2017, October 4,2017,October 18, 2017, November 8,2017, November 15, 2017, December 6, 2017, December 20, 2017,January 10, 2018,January 24, 2018, February 7, 2018, February 28, 2018, March 14, 2018,April 4,2018 and April 25, 2018. Seconded by Mrs. Stefan. Roll Call Vote; Katie Dugan-Aye,Jeanne Astino-Aye, Ellen Maher-Aye,Jennifer Madden-Aye Page 2 of 3 Executive Session Motion by Mrs. Dugan to go into Executive Session for reason#3, Collective Bargaining, Custodians, seconded by Mrs. Madden.The Board will return to open session only to adjourn the meeting. Roll call vote: Barbara Stefan—Aye, Katie Dugan-Aye,Jeanne Astino—Aye, Ellen Maher—Aye,Jennifer Madden—Aye. Committee went into executive session at 8:09PM. Motion by Mrs. Maher to adjourn the Executive Session at 8:39 p.m., seconded by Mrs. Dugan. Roll call vote: Barbara Stefan—Aye, Katie Dugan-Aye,Jeanne Astino—Aye, Ellen Maher—Aye,Jennifer Madden—Aye.
