HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - SC - 08/12/2015 U T CQ%ASSET O C k1 School Committee Minutes Wednesday,August 12, 2015 Selectmen's Office-Town Hall 41 Highland Avenue Cohasset, MA In Attendance: Jeanne Astino, Chairman Mary McGoldrick Ellen Maher Katie Dugan Also in Attendance: Barbara Cataldo, Superintendent Dave DeGennaro, Business Manager Chairman Astino called the meeting to order and asked for a roll call vote. Katie Dugan-Present,Jeanne Astino-Present, Ellen Maher-Present, Mary McGoldrick-Present. Chairman Astino asked for a motion to go into executive session for Exemption#3 to discuss strategy with respect to collective bargaining for teachers and #4 to discuss the deployment of security devices. The Committee will reconvene in public session. Motion was moved by Mrs. McGoldrick, seconded by Mrs. Dugan. Katie Dugan-Aye, Mary McGoldrick-Aye, Ellen Maher-Aye,Jeanne Astino-Aye. The Committee went into executive session at 6:03 p.m. The Committee came out of executive session and back into public session at 7:18 p.m. Pledge of Allegiance-Recited Invitation to Speak-None Approval of Minutes Motion by Mrs. McGoldrick to approve the minutes of 6/17/15 as amended, seconded by Mrs. Dugan and the vote was unanimous (4-0). Motion by Mrs. McGoldrick to approve the minutes of 7/7/15 as amended, seconded by Mrs. Dugan and the vote was unanimous (4-0). Superintendent's Report Gifts Motion by Mrs. McGoldrick to accept the gift of$5736.00 from the Cohasset Hockey Boosters for ice rentals, seconded by Mrs. Dugan. Katie Dugan-Aye, Mary McGoldrick-Aye, Ellen Maher-Aye,Jeanne Astino-Aye. Motion by Mrs. McGoldrick to accept the gift of$5000.00 from the Friends of Cohasset Football for a grant donation awarded by Pilgrim Bank to fund the summer fitness program, seconded by Mrs. Dugan. Katie Dugan-Aye, Mary McGoldrick-Aye, Ellen Maher-Aye,Jeanne Astino-Aye. Bus Maintenance Plan Superintendent Cataldo distributed an FY16 Transportation Maintenance log which Mr. DeGennaro has developed for each bus to track repairs, cost of repairs, days out of service etc. At this time, all but 2 of the buses are ready to go. Two buses had minor issues and were fixed. The DOT will be back for a follow up inspection on 8/14. Superintendent Cataldo and Mr. DeGennaro visited First Student, New England Transportation, Wilder Bros. and Steve's. All maintenance services are covered. They feel confident after speaking with companies that the town will have the onsite help it needs and they don't believe it would be more than about 5 hours a week. The bus coordinator and Mr. DeGennaro will be trained on the laptop and codes on August 251". Superintendent Cataldo reviewed the details of the meeting with First Student on August 5`". The maintenance person is available to provide onsite services to Cohasset. Superintendent Cataldo discussed the options available. Mrs. Dugan thanked Superintendent Cataldo and Mr. DeGennaro for their work. She agreed that option 2A provides everything that the town needs. Superintendent Cataldo suggested possibly having a First Student technician on site for the first few weeks of school to ensure everything goes smoothly. The Committee had a lengthy discussion. Superintendent Cataldo and Mr. DeGennaro will continue to explore what is needed for onsite maintenance. Hiring Status Superintendent Cataldo stated two 2"d grade teachers were hired in July. She received a resignation 48 hours ago in Grade 1. She doesn't think it will be an issue hiring a Grade 1 teacher as they have had a number of good candidates. The new Science teacher they hired withdrew from the position due to a family illness. Mr. LeCount is still interviewing for the music position at the Osgood School. They have 2 final candidates from the Deputy CIO interviews. They will be making their decision soon. Status of New Website The staff will be attending training next week for the new website. All principals,vice principals and central office administration will be trained.They will have a definitive launch date after next week. Flood Update Superintendent Cataldo advised the Committee the floors in the community room have been tiled over the last two days and the tables are in place. On August 31s'Comcast will fix the issues with the sound system. Mr. DeGennaro will give the Committee the final financial information from the flood after he receives the last few invoices. Enrollment Numbers Superintendent Cataldo distributed the Projections for FY16 enrollment comparing the March numbers to August. She also spoke about a request from the South Shore Charter School asking the MA Dept. of Education for an increase in their maximum enrollment. Finance Motion by Mrs. McGoldrick to approve Warrant 16-035, seconded by Mrs. Dugan. Katie Dugan-Aye, Mary McGoldrick-Aye,Jeanne Astino-Aye. Ellen Maher abstained from the vote. FY15 Update and Closing Process Mr. DeGennaro discussed the account balance for FY15 of$290,509 which will be used as prepayment for Special Ed out of District Tuition. Motion by Mrs. Maher to accept the end of year balances and closing the books for FY15,seconded by Mrs. McGoldrick. Katie Dugan-Aye, Mary McGoldrick-Aye, Ellen Maher-Aye,Jeanne Astino-Aye. School Committee Comments and Communications Chairman Astino stated the AEC will be meeting on Monday, August 17t". Mrs. Dugan stated the technology committee has decided to postpone their meeting until after school starts. They wanted to have the new CIO and Deputy CIO in place. Chairman Astino asked that the updated list of sub- committees be put in the next couple of meeting packets. She also stated there was a new category added to the agenda for follow up and updates to help the Committee stay on task. Chairman Astino spoke about the meeting schedule and suggested maybe the Committee hold meetings every other week instead of twice a month. She asked the Committee to consider. Chairman Astino stated the School Committee had a joint meeting with the Board of Selectman last night and discussed the process for the appointment of a new member. They put an announcement in the Mariner and on Blackboard Connect. The received 5 applicants and will hopefully appoint a member on August 19t" AEC Vehicle Policy Chairman Astino summarized what the policy was. Motion by Mrs. McGoldrick to approve the AEC Vehicle Policy as presented, seconded by Mrs. Dugan. Katie Dugan-Aye, Mary McGoldrick-Aye, Ellen Maher-Aye,Jeanne Astino-Aye. Motion by Mrs. McGoldrick to go back into executive session for exemption#4 to discuss the deployment of security devices,seconded by Mrs. Dugan. Katie Dugan-Aye, Mary McGoldrick-Aye, Ellen Maher-Aye,Jeanne Astino-Aye. The Committee went into executive session at 9:14 p.m. The Committee came out of executive session at 9:50 p.m. Motion by Mrs. McGoldrick to adjourn, seconded by Mrs. Dugan and the vote was unanimous (4-0).
