MINUTES
In attendance: Paul Kierce, Tana Carlson, Elinore Barrett, Bebe McCarron,James
Mensching, Sue Reagan, Elaine Coyne, Diana Karcher,Taffy Northnagle
Also Attending: Nancy LaFauce
Not in Attendance: Kelli Gildea, Cindy Swartwood,
Liaisons: Katie Dugan, Sandra Halverson, Helene Lieb, Ed Mulvey, Jeff Trainor
Paul Kierce, Chairman, opened the meeting at 8:35 am
Minutes of the September and October meetings were accepted
Treasurer's Report:
We are within budget. Revolving fund shows excess.
Liaison Reports:
Advisory Board- Helene Lieb - gave an overview of what advisory board does.
South Shore Elder Services - Ed Mulvey- Ed shared SSES news.
School Committee - Katie Dugan - 2 issues regarding schools - Teacher contract
mediation and security at the Deer Hill. Administrators, paraprofessionals and
secretaries also need raises.
Safe Harbor program, Hidden in Plain Sight was excellent. Many educators attended
Mike Lopes is the new school resource officer and has been very well received.
Working on coordinating efforts with Elders Affairs to combine resources when it
comes to vans, fleet management and maintenance.
SSL - Sandra Halverson - Issues are the same. Selectman's meeting 11/10 @ 8:00 to
finalize agreement to purchase building. Pledges are not being made until the issues
of the building are settled. The will of Mary Hooper is binding forever. The Swim
Trust (Diana Karcher) supports the SSL and the parking contract will not hold up
sale.
Safe Harbor Coalition will hold a meeting on 11/19 at Willcutt.
Police Dept-Jeff Trainor- Officers Bates, Harrington, and Helbock are the newest
members of the police force.
School resource officer Lopes is invaluable.
IRS/Electric Co./Child in trouble scams are targeting elders. Call the police.
Ongoing Business Updates
Paul Kierce -As a board we need to decide how to offer programs, and whether to
charge or ask for donations.
TM says Elders revolving fund should work like the Rec. Dept. Rec./Elders/and
Schools should work together as community. Rec. dept. will offer programs for
residents up to the age of 40.
Paul - There are income and state mandates to offer programs without charge.
Do we offer some programs for a suggested donation?
Director's Report
Nancy LaFauce - Meeting with UMass Boston's Chris Johnson about the My Senior
program went well.
Social Security presentation at the Lightkeeper's went well.
Cafe has decided to be open year round except holidays and snow days.
Alzheimer's program was successful.
Margot Cheel offered a session of Living out your Legacy (Artist Way).
Italian classes are well attended.
The High School band played at the Octoberfest-very well attended.
100 people were seen at the Flu Clinic.
75 surveys were returned.
A meeting will be held monthly with Rec dept(Ted Carroll), Coral and HR personnel.
Celebrity Chef program - BOH's ruling is that all meals have to be prepared onsite.
Menu will be published in advance.
Meeting adjourned @ 10:25am.
